Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women: Mary, called Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources. You hear a great deal about the Twelve who accompanied Jesus. Not so much about the women except for Mary Magdalene. Yet, St. Luke implies that it was because they shared their resources with Jesus that he was able to live his itinerant ministry. While we decry how the role of women in the Jesus movement was belittled there is something positive we can glean from this passage — not just the bold-face names were responsible for the foundation of the Church but people we hardly know. A reminder that no matter our status we are important in the kingdom of God.
