The parable of the sower is a rich source for meditation. We look at how we receive the word of God. Are we easily led astray? Are we rootless, not doing what is necessary to sustain the word? Are we distracted by the anxieties and pleasures of life? But those questions arise from the explanation of the parable. The parable itself poses a different question since its focus is not on the soil receiving the seed but on the one doing the sowing. A sower went out to sow his seed. The challenge of the parable (without the subsequent explanation) is that we should not be obsessed about results. Spread the word of God’s love broadly and leave how it is received in God’s hands.
