The Jesus movement was not a family affair. Jesus said, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” That serves as a reminder that no one comes to the faith as a birth right. We tend to think that the Irish are Catholics or the Mexicans are Catholics. As we are experiencing in today’s world we can’t take those heritages for granted. You don’t have the faith simply by birth — as Jesus demonstrated in his dealings with his own family. Faith is always a choice, a matter of letting the word of God sink into one’s heart and then acting in ways that reflect the grace and mercy of God in one’s life.
