“The love of money is the root of all evil.” St. Paul suggests that we get ourselves in trouble when we lose our “contentment.” “If we have food and clothing we should be content with that.” I have noticed that what I require for “contentment” has expanded over time. First, I decide I need a car. Later, a car with air conditioning. Then a car with a sound system. Expanding needs. I need a computer. Then a lap top. Then a tablet, and so on. None of this is bad in itself but it can corrupt me when my comforts blind me to the plight of the poor or when I find myself unable to move outside of my comfort zone in following God’s will.
