St. Paul lists seven “ones:” one Body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father. For him, unity lies at the core of reality. We live in a society which notices differences rather than unity. My country is better than your country. This people are “other” than I am so I don’t need to care for them. My comfort matters more than what the next generation will have to endure. The Apostle says we need to think differently. Look at the example of Jesus. Instead of seeing Matthew, the tax collector, as an enemy, a someone to oppose, he saw him as someone who belonged, who was part of the body. In our prayer today let us include everyone.
