There is a wonderful painting by Caravaggio, The Calling of Saint Matthew. The scene: group of dandies dressed in the finest clothes are seated around the counting table. Jesus is depicted as having entered the building and pointing to the tax collector. Matthew points to himself in a “who me?” gesture. The picture describes not just Matthew’s call but all of ours. We know our faults, failings and weaknesses. We can’t imagine that Jesus would call us to bring good news into the world. Yet, called we are. We are all share Matthew’s apostolic vocation as bearers of the gospel. “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do,” Jesus said. Our sick selves are healed by Jesus for others’ sake.
