Qoheleth, the author of the Book of Ecclesiastes, had a somewhat cynical view of the world — been there, done that, got the T-Shirt. Even the thing of which we say, “See, this is new!” has already existed in the ages that preceded us. You hate to disagree with the Bible but I have to think that even Qoheleth would be surprised by rocket ships, computers and microwave ovens. What is true is that human nature hasn’t changed over the millennia. Then and now we are prone to selfishness, greed, lust and are capable of compassion, generosity, charity. The challenge of our life is not to feel stuck with what’s going on in us today. With God’s help we can grow “in wisdom, age and grace.”
