Several years ago there was a priest meeting where we discussed the different attitudes of the various generational cohorts. I was struck when someone said “I am a John Paul II priest and you are a Vatican II priest.” It sounded an awful lot like the situation that St. Paul bemoans in the Church of Corinth. Whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely men? We are thinking as human beings do and not as God does when we say “I support Pope Benedict” or “I support Pope Francis,” when we divide the Church up into the liberals and the conservatives. We must heed the message of the Apostle and see everything in light of God.
