The call of the first disciples in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark is very abrupt. Jesus calls; they follow. Luke describes a process of being a disciple that rings true to our experience. First, they are interested in what Jesus says. Then they are attracted enough to the message that they let him use their boat. Next, the respond to his invitation to “put out into the deep” even though this disturbs their sense of the normal. “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” Then the awe at what God can do followed by a sense of unworthiness in the divine presence. Finally accepting that God can use even fallible me.
