A cynic is someone who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing, according to Oscar Wilde. The Book of Ecclesiastes seems cynical at times. “All is vanity.” You hate to disagree with the Bible but I don’t think the author is correct in saying: “Nothing is new under the sun.” Have you ever seen a child? Each child is new, a fresh start, a beginning with unforseen potential. This is the plan of God — that we understand we are not trapped, that no matter how dire things appear at times God is still at work. Every child, every sunrise, every flower, every act of love testifies to the ability of God to bring new life into our battered and bruised world.
