Jesus resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem. In St. Luke’s telling, this is the turing point of the gospel. Jesus has had some success in his ministry in Galilee but the heart of Jesus life was in Jerusalem so Jesus needed to bring his message of God’s love there. He has no illusion that this was a pleasure jaunt. Immediately upon turning toward Jerusalem he meets opposition. Several times on the journey he talks about the fact that suffering and death await him in Jerusalem. But Jesus knows if he is to fulfill the mission given him by his Heavenly Father he was go. In our lives, doing the right thing — forgiving someone who hurt us, giving to someone in need — costs us as well.
