The Book of Job is not about a historical character but something of a morality tale. The character of Satan in the book is not the embodiment of evil as in the New Testament but something like a prosecuting attorney. He accuses Job of not really loving God but rather loving the blessings which come from God. Satan is given the opportunity to make his case by stripping Job of all his blessings. Satan expects that Job will reject God once the blessings are torn away. Instead Job prayed, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!” We are tempted to imagine that the Lord is blessing us when things are going well. The Biblical lesson from Job is that the Lord is with us and loving us whether we are feeling the blessings for not. Like Job we must cling to our love of God both in good times and in bad.
