During the civil rights era one tactic employed was the “sit-in.” It was illegal in segregated states for black folk to sit at lunch counters so the protestors would deliberately do the provocative act of sitting where they won’t supposed to sit to make the world notice the state of affairs. Jesus seemed to do similarly provocative actions to get this opponents to think about what was going on. Following a set of rules about Sabbath observance without a change of heart was futile. Jesus proclaimed, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.” He wanted his disciples to see what was really important. As followers of Jesus it is not sufficient to fall into the rut of routine observance. Our hearts must change!
