In Genesis we read: “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.” From this Biblical account comes the practice of Sabbath rest, of resting from our labors just as God did. This Holy Saturday was a day of Sabbath rest for Jesus. All of his labors were accomplished, particularly the greatest work of all, his suffering and death. We, the followers of Jesus, can catch our breath on this day as well. We can rest in the salvation won for us on the cross and prepare ourselves to plunge back into the work of the gospel.
