The story of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes obviously had a big impact on the followers of Jesus. It is one of the few incidents mentioned in all four gospels — Mark and Matthew twice. What was most impressive, obviously was that thousands were fed. But what I find most interesting is the starting point. When Jesus tells the disciples he wants to feed the crowd they object that they can’t possibly. “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” Jesus shows that little bit is enough. No matter what the problem out there — hunger, violence, immigration — if we give our little bit to help God will multiply it beyond measure.
