In one sense it is a tragedy that individuals, families or even countries that used to be Catholic have abandoned the faith. The “nones,” those who have no religious affiliation, are the fastest growing religious demographic. On the other hand, the fact that the faith is no longer presumed, no longer simply part of the cultural baggage one carries, can be a good thing. When the Hebrews came into the Promised Land Joshua challenged them: “Decide today whom you will serve … As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Faith is not something one inherits but a decision. Yes, we are beloved of God already but each one of us has to decide whether to respond to that love in our lives.
