“Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Grieving is a universal human experience. Loss is something that we all go through. So in one sense, Jesus asking twice about Mary Magdalene’s weeping seems odd. Weeping is appropriate when the one you love has been “taken away.” In the Gospel Jesus is warning Mary about a kind of grief which can’t let the beloved go. “Stop holding on to me,” our Lord says. Yes, loss is real and loss is painful. But loss is not permanent. One day we shall joyfully be reunited with the beloved in singing God’s praises. So weep and grieve but do so with hope for to those who have gone before us life is changed, not ended.
