Jesus said, “Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” How can I be perfect? I’ve already messed up plenty. Is this another saying that should be filed under “are you kidding me?” When you look at the text things are not as they appear in the English. The word translated as “perfect” in Greek as the connotation of being what you are made to be. The Heavenly Father is perfect because God always acts as God — with compassion, mercy, forgiveness, salvation on the just and the unjust alike. We human beings become perfect when we act out of our created nature and purpose. AND, since we are made in God’s image and likeness that means sharing God’s compassion, mercy, forgiveness, salvation with everyone.
