When you enter the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. the first thing you notice is a giant mosaic of Jesus entitled Christ in Majesty. It is a severe image, of a judge and ruler. Certainly nothing of the “meek and humble of heart” person Jesus proclaimed himself to be. Perhaps one of the reasons of the continuing popularity of devotion to the Sacred Heart (placed on the Church’s calendar in 1885) is as a corrective to an idea of Christ as “taking names.” The Bible stresses over and over the love of God. The judgment of God is done out of love and not out of a desire to punish. Our own devotions should lead us to experience God’s enduring love for us.
