Jesus said, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” The royal official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” This exchange in St. John’s Gospel captures in an instant something of our relationship with God. Jesus looked at the big picture, how his actions were seen and interpreted. The royal official was only worried about his little corner of the world. So for us, while we might know the catechism and the creeds of the Church, it is how God is present to us in the circumstances of life that really makes the difference in our faith. The real challenge is that we attend to God’s presence not only in crisis moments but in daily providence of living.
