In the days of Holy Week we read from what are known as the Servant Songs from the second part of the book of Isaiah. The prophet speaks of God’s servant who went through suffering in order to reach glory. You are my servant, he said to me through whom I show my glory. The first Christians went back to the Servant Songs to help them understand who Jesus was. Being able to tell the story of the Chosen People — which was checkered with saints and sinners — helped the first believers makes sense of the present. Perhaps the way through the difficulty we are facing in the United States currently is to remember our story as a nation with all of its ups and downs.
