Lots of twists and turns in the book of Genesis. Abram was brought into the promised land with the assurance that his descendants would be given the land as an eternal inheritance. Then Abram’s grandson gets a new message. God, called, “Jacob! Jacob! I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you a great nation. Not only will I go down to Egypt with you; I will also bring you back here. What God didn’t say was it would be 430 years before the people returned to the promised land! The lesson: don’t become overwhelmed by the problems right in front of us for God’s plan unfolds in the arc of history.
