On this day when we remember the Guardian Angels the reading is taken from these words of Jesus in St. Matthew’s Gospel: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” Even though the feast itself was not added to the Church’s calendar until the 17th century, the caring presence of divine messengers in our lives is a Biblical teaching. As Jesus taught us, every single person, even the smallest, is valuable and important to God just in being who they are, deserving of divine protection. We cannot use people for our own ends but must treat every individual as having infinite, eternal worth.
