In the play Fiddler on the Roof the father, Tevye, is confronted by changing traditions. His eldest daughter does not follow his wishes to enter an arranged marriage. The second daughter goes to Siberia to marry “the man I love.” He manages to accept these changes in “the tradition.” However, the third daughter marries a gentile. Tevye can’t accept that. “How can I turn my back on my faith, my people? If I try and bend that far, I’ll break,” he says. That helps us to understand what Jesus says today: “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” There are times when we must make a choice for God no matter what.
