Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. Jesus used the image of Jonah to describe his ministry. The gospel writers (a generation later) interpreted this in different ways. For St. Luke it meant that Jesus was like Jonah preaching the need for repentance. For St. Matthew it meant that Jesus would spend time in the tomb just as Jonah spend time in the belly of the whale. We have no way of knowing if Jesus meant one or the other or both. All of which says something about reading the scriptures. There is always a richer and fuller sense. Each time you read a passage the Word will say something new to you.
