Toward the end of the Book of Isaiah there is a vision of a “new heavens and a new earth.” According to this vision “there shall always be rejoicing and happiness.” Everyone lives a good, long life. “He dies a mere youth who reaches but a hundred years.” This idealized picture of the future concludes by saying: “They shall live in the houses they build, and eat the fruit of the vineyards they plant.” For the Prophet, therefore, the ideal life is not sitting on a beach drinking pina coladas but being able to live responsibly, working for oneself and one’s family. Our world is no Eden but we should strive so that the whole spectrum of society can live and work in dignity.
