It is an article of faith that Jesus shared humanity with us — “he was like us in all things but sin.” That means he shared the human condition with us — all of the polticial, social, economic and religious conditions that include sin. The religious authorities that rejected Jesus were not so much reacting to his message as they were playing partisan politics. The Chief Priest said, “It is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish.” One man’s death will enable us to maintain our grip on power. While meant cynically, St. John interprets it as a prophecy — that Jesus’ death did save the people just not in ways that the leaders had anticipated. The lesson for us: doing the right thing, not the expedient thing, is the true path to life.
