At the Last Supper Jesus prayed, “that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” Jesus is probably still praying that prayer since from the beginning right up to today we have not achieved the unity he prayed for. Instead we find fussing and feuding. Race, ethnictiy, language and class can be the source of division. In addition, much disunity arises because of the perception that somebody else is getting something I’m not getting. This zero sum thinking was present even in the first moments of the Church. The Hellenists [the Greek speakers] complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected. The same attitude is present today in the resentment being expressed about the outreach being extended to the new immigrants. “Hey, what about me!” We do not live in a zero sum world. God has abundantly blessed us. There is more than enough for all once we recognize the face of Christ in the stranger.
