This is a day of silence and stillness. We are in a time of pause between the agony of Good Friday and the joy of Easter. We are to notice emptiness. In our day we fill emptiness with FaceBook, Sirius Radio, streaming video, chat rooms. But the liturgy asks us to stop, be silent, reflect. There is an ancient tradition captured in the statement of the Apostles’ Creed, “he descended into hell,” associated with Holy Saturday. After his crucifixion Jesus entered the realm of death to search for Adam and Eve and the righteous. He announced to them his triumph over death and led them not back to Eden but to the gates of heaven. This day is the perfect opportunity to remember our ancestors.
