My father was a very kind person who seldom criticized others. The strongest thing I remember him calling someone was “a jabroney.” To this day I don’t know what a jabroney is but I know it’s not good. The way the apostles acted in the gospels — self-centered and clueless — would merit them being called a bunch of jabroneys. This Easter season we read from the Acts of the Apostles to testify that it wasn’t just Jesus who was transformed at Easter it was the followers of Jesus as well. Because of the Resurrection they changed from fearful complainers to bold witnesses. Since we are Easter people we are changed so that we see our troubles, even a pandemic, in light of Christ’s triumph over death.
