The twelve whom Jesus chose to carry on his mission after the Resurrection were not the obvious choices. They weren’t the movers and the shakers, those with power and influence. No, they were, in fact, uneducated, ordinary men at the authorities observed. What they experienced was that God was present in the life of Jesus. They messed up periodically out of human weakness but their intention stayed true. This is captured in the response that Peter and John made when challenged about their proclamation of Jesus: It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard. During these Easter days like none ever before we must reflect on what we have “seen and heard” and share it with others.
