Jesus said, God does not ration his gift of the Spirit. God gives us all the Spirit we could possibly want or use. We aren’t like that. We tend to ration our care and compassion toward our little circle of friends and family. I am reminded of a book I read 60 or so years ago (!) called Prayers, by Michel Quoist. In one of the prayers, the speaker says that he is more than willing to open his door a crack, to let in one person that he can help with their ills and lavish some attention upon. The problem: as soon as he opened the door a crack to let in one person a whole flood of people came with them. The problems are overwhelming and the speaker complains it is too much for him to handle. Jesus answers this pray-er by saying, “Do not worry, for when all the people were flooding in, I slipped in among them.”
