Jesus said, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” So they filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments. We don’t know what happened with those twelve wicker baskets full of food. It is instructive that Jesus was concerned about waste. We as a nation need to have a greater concern for waste. 119 Billion pounds of food are wasted in the United States every year — 40% of the food produced. The Pantry tries to “rescue” some food that will be wasted from local supermarkets. We should personally be concerned about how we are wasteful — and not just about food. We also waste electricity (which contributes to global warming). Perhaps the most precious gift of God we waste is time. In your prayer today do a self-examination of how you can be less wasteful.
