The Easter season goes from now until Pentecost, the fiftieth day. During this time the first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles — testimony to the impact that the resurrection of Jesus had on his followers. A large portion of the Book of Acts is given over to speeches. In Acts 2 we have St. Peter’s first sermon which demonstrates what the early Christian preaching was like. It contained two elements above all — a reflection on the Biblical tradition and an appeal to the lived experience of the encounter of the disciples with the Risen Lord. Our faith should share in that same methodology. We must ground our experience of God in the traditions we have inherited as the measure of its authenticity.
