When sports are resumed and stadiums are full again no doubt there will be a sign in the stands: John 3:16. God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. The key idea in that saying is that “God loved the world.” Instead of imaging that Jesus came in order to placate a God angered by human sin, we should picture God as plotting, planning, scheming to find ways to bring divine love into a world which had rejected that love. God never stops loving us not matter what we do and that love is available to us always not because we are good but because God is good.
