It takes humility to be an evangelist. That struck me today when the gospel reading for the Feast of St. Mark was not from the original version of the gospel as written by St. Mark but from an addendum added at some point to the original text (but recognized by the Church as canonical.) That illustrates to me the humility required by an evangelist — it is not the evangelist’s message that he promotes but the message God wants him to share. Since we are all called to be evangelists, bringers of good news into a hurting world, the lesson of humility is an important one for us. We are only responsible for sharing what we have received. God will see to how it is received.
