In the Acts of the Apostles there are several long speeches by St. Peter and by St. Paul. We don’t know if they are actual transcripts but they do reflect faithfully the early preaching of the Church. The second of the sermons given by Peter begins with him fussing with the people about the need for repentance. Then he remind his listeners, “You are the children of the prophets.” It was as if St. Peter was saying to them “you are better than this.” Their glorious heritage promised a potential glorious future. We need to heed that message day. Yes, there are conflict and divisions in society and the Church. But we are children of the prophets, saints, apostles, missionaries who show us our potential.
