The days had been intense for the disciples of Jesus. The Last Supper, his arrest and trial, his torture and execution, his death and burial, and finally the appearance of the Risen Lord. You can easily imagine that the disciples were looking for things to calm down, to return to normal. So they went home and tried to return to the life they knew. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” But it turned out they couldn’t do it, they couldn’t revert to their old way of life. Now, they needed Jesus even to ply the trade they so well. St. John tells that story about those disciples because it is a story of all of us who are disciples of Jesus. Once we have decided to make Jesus our choice everything must be seen in the light he brings. Family, work, money, health, relationships, use of time, education — you name it, our connection with Jesus means we see things in a gospel perspective.
