From now until Pentecost the Gospel reading for each day will be taken from John, chapters 14-17, called by scholars the “Last Supper Discourse.” According to the Fourth Gospel, on the day before he died, Jesus was preparing his disciples on how to continue his mission in the world once he no longer walked among them. This is possible because of the ongoing presence of “the Paraclete,” the Holy Spirit. The Discourse meshes nicely with this liturgical season since we too are called to rely on the Holy Spirit so that we can live as the Body of Christ in the world. The Discourse starts by Jesus stressing that he would continue to be with them so they need to maintain their personal relationship. Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” We too are invited to move beyond knowing about Jesus to feeling his presence in our midst.
