The founder of my religious congregation, Fr. Thomas Judge, gathered people together because of his spiritual insight that “every Catholic is called to be an apostle.” Pope Francis expresses a similar theme when he says that there is a universal call to be “missionary disciples.” The bottom line: sharing the faith is not something for specialists — priests and religious — but the responsibility of every Christian. No one can object that they are “uneducated and ordinary” for that is how the Bible describes the first apostles. Nor can we demur that we don’t know how to be a “missionary disciple.” St. Peter and John tell us what to do: Not talk theology or give instruction just “speak about what we have seen and heard.”
