Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” At the Last Supper Jesus was providing some marching orders for his followers once he was gone. Philip shared the illusion of most of us that we need something else in order to connect with God — another prayer, another insight, another experience. Jesus wanted Philip, and us, to understand that we have all that we need already. God is nearer to us than we are to ourselves, according to St. Augustine. All we need do is come to an awareness of the presence and action of God in our lives right today. In your prayer today, look at the various elements that make up your day and find in them the divine presence reaching out to you.
