The story of Jesus multiplying the loaves and fish made a big impression on his followers. The gospel writers tell it six times! In St. John’s account the apostles respond that they can’t possible help others since they have so little, only five loaves and two fish. “What good are these for so many?” Jesus substitutes a narrative of scarcity with one of generosity. Instead of hoarding the little bit that they have, by giving it away they have enough and more than enough. That lesson is as relevant today as it was two thousand years ago. Certainly it is a call to charity. We can also apply the lesson to our vocation as apostles and share whatever (little?) faith we have with others.
