Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” You can catch all of the discouragement, all of the pain that Jesus was feeling in that question. He had tried to reach out to people, to touch them, to give them hope. And he promised to be with them always whenever they shared at the Eucharistic Table for “my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.” But they rejected him and his message. Turning to those closest to him he wondered how total the disaster would be. Et tu? Peter responded, “Master, to whom shall we go?” doubtless this shifted the mood. The twelve might not get it completely, they might stumble along the way, but they knew that the only true path to life and love and joy came by walking with Jesus.
