From now until Pentecost the daily gospel reading will be take from the Last Supper Discourse in St. John’s gospel: chapters 13-17. Chapter 13 contains the story of the washing of the feet with the line “I have given you an example.” The subsequent chapters serve as kind of a last will and testament of Jesus where he bestows his legacy on the disciples. He knows that his departing from them will be difficult and he wants to empower them to continue his mission in the world. Of course, the most important message he conveys is that he will be with them even after he departs this world. I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.
