Jesus said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” We need that word today. There is so much to fear. I fear that our unwillingness to deal with climate change is irreparably harming “our common home.” I fear the legacy of racism in our country condemns another generation to a lack of equal opportunity. (Not that this is unique to our country — see the squabbling between the Greek and Hebrew speakers in Acts.) I fear that the grasping after political power even at the expense of truth is destroying our national concensus. Jesus says that we overcome our fear when we recognize him. In another place he told us where to look for him: in the least of the brothers and sisters.
