Often in St. John’s Gospel there are seemingly throw away lines. After a contentious confrontation between Jesus and the “chief priests and Pharisees” we read: Then each went to his own house. Maybe we could better translate that by using a boxing analogy: then each retired to their respective corners. St. John want us to understand that the enemies of Jesus had their minds made up and “don’t confuse me with the facts.” The soldiers challenge them to think differently. “Never before has anyone spoken like this man.” Nicodemus asks them to look again to at least listen to what Jesus has to say. No, they went to their own house, to their own pre-concieved ideas, thus missing the new thing that God was doing.
