“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus as the light of the world is part of a long biblical tradition. At the very first moment of creation God said, “Let there be light.” This was even before the creation of the sun, moon and stars! There are at least 277 times when light is used as an image of God in the Bible. A scientific understanding of light even fortifies this image for light is found in a spectrum. Visible light that we see is only part of how light appears in the world … which serves as a good metaphor that seeing God takes us beyond what we ordinarily know.
