After their encounter with the Risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus Mr. and Mrs. Cleopas hastened back to Jerusalem to meet with the apostles. They recounted what had taken place along the way,and how they had come to recognize him in the breaking of bread. St. Luke tells this Resurrection story to those early Christians to remind them of how they too will encounter the Risen Jesus. First, in the Scriptures. It was hearing Jesus explain the history of salvation that caused their ‘burning hearts.’ Second, in the breaking of the bread. This term for the celebration of the Eucharist encouraged those first believers to gather together as a community and heed the command of Jesus to “do this in remembrance of me,” Jesus was really present to them around the Eucharistic table just as he had been in Emmaus. That is our story as well.
