One of the chilling lines in the scripture is found in a speech of St. Peter in the Acts of the Apostles. He reminds his hearers that they handed Jesus over to Pilate. Then he says, “Now I know, brothers and sisters, that you acted out of ignorance.” That line terrifies me because it was not malice, not evil, not hatred that led to the death of Jesus, but merely ignorance. In other words, we are capable of doing great harm even with good intentions if we act in ignorance. To ensure that I not do something as horrible as killing the Son of God I must work against my ignorance about the reality of other people. I must learn to look through their eyes.
