The book of Wisdom (or the Wisdom of Solomon) is included in the Catholic Bible. It was written in Greek, probably in Alexandria, Egypt, sometime in the first century before Christ. The book is meant as encouragement for Jews to hold onto the faith while confronting a hostile culture. The early followers of Jesus used this book and, in fact, the whole of Jewish scripture to help them understand the person and the mission of Jesus. For example, the opposition to “the just one” described in Wisdom 2:1f was seen as fulfilled in Jesus. This serves to remind us that we will come to know who Jesus is only by appreciating the Jewish roots which formed him and which the Church used to define him.
